This is MERLOT,

Please note this is a military move AND deployment (both are in the military) situation so they are NOT just giving their dog away to make their lives easier and in fact this is breaking their hearts.

Merlot is a very sweet Cockapoo who is an inside dog and a bit prissy staying out unless he can sunbathe a bit. He wants to be with people in the middle of the action and loved on. Using the cone and the Bailey chair and finding the right food has cut his regurgitation down significantly. He has a beautiful coat and doesn’t shed, is obedient and still has the energy and stamina of a puppy. He is loved and we want him to continue to be loved and cared for because he has so much life to live.

  • Microchipped
  • Heartworm prevention meds monthly

Where and how did we get this dog:

California from a cockapoo breeder; have had Merlot since he was 10 weeks old

Where and how was ME diagnosed:

Animal hospital: Rosamond, CA at 5 months; born with it

X-rays or barium swallow: X-rays

Meds currently taken: Tri-Heart Plus for prevention of heartworms

Food brands and consistency (meatballs, milkshake, pureed, etc):

  • Tried many but doing wonderfully on Canidae dog food
  • Soak ¼ cup dry food in water for 30 minutes then add wet/canned food (about 3 Tbsp)
  • Mix with spoon for oatmeal consistency
  • He loves it and does awesome

Fed how many times per day in what position and timeframe:

  • Fed 2 times a day (about 9 am and 5 pm)
  • We built a Bailey’s chair (which will go with him)
  • Sits upright in chair for 20 minutes
  • He can get in chair with no problem and lays head on tray when done and sits quietly
  • DO NOT forget he is in the chair – he is quiet and won’t remind you (we set a timer)

Hydration method and consistency (Knox Blox, SubQ, Thick It, etc): Just water mixed with food. We will give him a bit of water with crushed ice after a walk or if hot then he sits in chair for 20 min after.

Items that will go to the new home: Oh my! He is spoiled and loved!!!

  • Bailey’s chair,
  • 3 beds
  • Blanket
  • 3 collars
  • Leash
  • Bucket of toys (he loves Mr. Duckworth and gets a new one every 3 months)
  • Rest of food wet and dry
  • Dog bowls
  • Kong blue “cone” neck pillow

Exercise preferred (if any) and level (high, moderate, low): low; he does like small walks and to fetch his toys, runs with kiddos when playing

Miscellaneous:

  • LOVES kids (I have 4 and he will be lost without them)
  • Good with other dogs
  • He is passive
  • Not been around cats, but Merlot has a very sweet and loving personality
  • Not leash trained and/or any other training, but does ok on small walks
  • Housebroken and has never had an accident
  • Uses a neck hug – not on him when eating

NOTE: Put it on when he wakes up and take it off after last potty at 9pm so he can sleep

without it; likes to sleep upside down.

  • Crate trained as a puppy, but Merlot is an old soul

NOTE: He likes to potty at 9 pm and wants to be in bed. You won’t hear from him until 8

am or so and he goes out and pees and poops like clockwork.

NOTES (any other pertinent information that will help you decide if you might be the safe, loving forever home):

“My heart is broken to see this precious part of our family leave. With our lifestyle in the military, we just cannot keep him and moving is hard on him. He is an inside dog and a bit prissy staying out unless he can sunbathe a bit. He wants to be with people in the middle of the action and loved on. Using the cone and the Bailey’s chair and finding the right food has cut his regurgitation down significantly. He has a beautiful coat and doesn’t shed. He is obedient and still has energy and stamina of a puppy. He is loved and we want him to continue to be loved and cared for. He has so much life.”
